Description
A house, originally built in the early 18th century and later subdivided into a pair of shops at numbers 28 and 28A High Street, Poole. Number 28 was extended to the rear in the early 19th century, and the shop fronts were replaced in the 20th century. The building is constructed of pale grey brick with red brick dressings, including rubbed brick heads over windows and party wall stacks, and has a tiled roof. It has a roughly L-shaped plan with a rear wing. The front facade is two storeys with an attic, and features a four-window range. A full-width shop front was added in the 20th century, retaining an earlier cornice. The original windows are 6/6-pane sashes in exposed frames, with flat, gauged brick arches and keystones above; two dormers were inserted in the mid-20th century. The moulded brick eaves cornice projects over the first-floor windows. The interior retains 18th-century features, including a rear lateral dog-leg staircase, corner fireplaces, and panelling. The early 18th-century facade is a notable example of early Georgian brickwork.
