Description
Bagillt Gaol, also known as the Lock Up, is a stone-built rectangular structure dating from the 19th century, set into a slope. The building features uncoursed rubble masonry with heavy dressed stone quoins. It has a pair of slit windows on opposing sides and a roof made of rectangular sandstone slabs arranged in four cantilevered courses, now secured with cramped non-ferrous cramps. There is evidence that the roof slabs were once tarred on the exterior.
The doorway on the southwest elevation has a replaced stone lintel and indented stone jambs with a pair of iron hinge bolts. It is fitted with a new studded metal door that has strap hinges, dating from restoration, while the original lock strap bolt remains in place. The door has a stone slab threshold with water channels.
Inside, the building is divided into two connected cells by a brick wall that includes a doorway with a pair of iron hinge bolts and a stone lintel. The floor is stone flagged, and the interior walls have been limewashed during restoration.
