Description
Bettisfield Colliery Lamp Room is a single-storey gabled building constructed in red brick with a slate roof, likely built around the 1880s. It is located on the edge of the marshes next to the railway in the area where coal mining began in the mid-18th century. The colliery itself was established in the mid-19th century and operated until the mid-20th century. The lamp room features a short brick chimney stack at the southwest end and a raised ventilator at the center. The southeast front elevation has three segmental arched windows, all currently blocked, along with a doorway. The roof eaves extend deeply across the front of the building and are supported by timber posts, creating a sheltered area for miners to queue while collecting their lamps. This building is listed for its group value with the adjacent winding engine house and is recognized as a rare surviving example of a former colliery lamproom.
