Description
Smithy Cottage and Ivy Cottage are two adjacent buildings. Ivy Cottage, located on the right when viewed from the south, is a single storey plus attic structure with two windows. It features painted brickwork, a slate roof, and a brick chimney on the right. The attic has casement windows set across the eaves and catslide roofs. On the ground floor, there is a 2-light window on the left and a 3-light window on the right, along with a lean-to on the right that includes a door. At the rear, there is a one-storey extension with a corner chimney on the right and small windows next to the stack.
Smithy Cottage, on the left when viewed from the south, is also made of painted brick and has a slate roof with a rendered central chimney. The doorway on the right leads to a 12-pane sash window on the left, followed by two Yorkshire sash windows. To the left, there is a store with a corrugated roof. The rear of Smithy Cottage has a slate roof and two windows: a casement window on the left and a Yorkshire sash on the right, with a plain end gable.
These cottages are rare examples of rural industrial buildings from this period and have group value with other nearby cottages and Gadlys Woods Farm.
