Description
Ivy Cottage, along with Smithy Cottage, are two attached cottages that were likely built in the 18th century by the London Lead Company, known for being the first to use coal to smelt lead and for producing much of the silver used in English coinage during the early 18th century.
Ivy Cottage is located on the right when viewed from the south. It is a single storey plus attic structure with two windows, constructed of painted brick with a slate roof and a brick chimney on the right. The attic features casement windows set across the eaves with catslide roofs. On the ground floor, there is a 2-light window on the left and a 3-light window on the right, along with a lean-to on the right that has a door. At the rear, there is a one-storey ground floor extension with a corner chimney on the right and small windows next to the stack.
Smithy Cottage is on the left when viewed from the south. It is made of painted brick and has a slate roof with a rendered central chimney. The doorway on the right has a 12-pane sash window to the left, followed by two Yorkshire sash windows. To the left, there is a store with a corrugated roof. The rear of Smithy Cottage has a slate roof and two windows, with a casement window on the left and a Yorkshire sash on the right, featuring a plain end gable.
These cottages are a rare example of rural industrial buildings from this period and have group value with other nearby cottages and Gadlys Woods Farm.
