Description
Porch Cottage is one of a group of cottages likely built in the 18th century by the London Lead Company, known for being the first to use coal for smelting lead and for producing much of the silver used in English coinage in the early 18th century.
The cottage is constructed of brick, rendered and limewashed, with a slate roof and a tall stepped chimney on the left. The front features a roughly central doorway with a boarded door and a 20th-century porch. To the right is a small Yorkshire sash window, while to the left is a larger Yorkshire sash window. Also to the left is a lean-to with two doors, and the front roof slope is steeper than that of the rear. The rear includes a clasping extension made of corrugated material, two windows set at the eaves, and two broad ground floor windows.
Porch Cottage is a rare example of an industrial workers' cottage from this period and is listed for its group value with other nearby cottages and Gadlys Woods Farm.
