Description

White House, formerly known as the School Mistresses House, is a small, 2-storey detached house that showcases three different architectural periods. The ground floor, which may date back to the 17th century, features thick sandstone-rubble walls that are now covered with a skim coat of render. The early 19th-century brick first floor was raised in height during the late 19th century, also in brick. The house has a plain central chimney stack from the final period of construction, a medium-pitch slate roof, and plain eaves.

The entrance is located on the south gable face, consisting of a recessed early 19th-century vertically-panelled door with a simple wooden surround. Above the door, there is a 2-light, 2-pane casement window, and to the left on the ground floor, there is a 4-pane sliding window, both of which are nearly flush with cambered heads. There is also evidence of a previous entrance on the west face, which has been replaced by a sliding window.

To the east, there is a single-storey lean-to that relates to the late 19th-century remodelling, featuring a slate roof and a small rear chimney on the eastern side. A near-flush 4-pane casement window is present on the south face, although it has modern glazing.
