Description

The former coach house range at Downing Hall is a two-storey, five-bay structure built of red brick and topped with a slate roof. It features two brick ridge stacks and a taller stack at the right end. The gables are adorned with freestone copings and kneelers. The wide carriage bays are topped with segmental brick arches that include stone keystones and contain double planked doors. Above these bays, there are multi-pane horizontal-sliding sash windows with stone sills. The gable ends have tall, blind, round-arched openings, with a stone-infilled panel beneath the eastern arch. A brick lean-to is partially preserved against the western gable end. At the center of the rear, there is a planked loft door accessed by an external brick and timber staircase, which is partly missing. This door is flanked by partially glazed, two-light window openings, with three on the left and two on the right, beneath which are stonework panels. The building stands on a stone plinth. Access to the interior was not available at the time of inspection.
