Description
This is the main range of buildings to the west side of a former stable courtyard at Downing Hall. The building dates from the mid-18th century, with later alterations. It comprises a tall, two-storey central block, slightly projecting forward, with lower, single-storey wings flanking it, one uphill to the left and one downhill to the right. The central block has a hipped roof and is constructed of red brick with freestone dressings. A bellcote is visible in a view of 1792. The right-hand wing is roughcast.
The central block features a stone, segmental-arched entrance, partly filled in with brick, bearing a keystone inscribed "1766." An impost band has been extended across the opening to serve as the lintel for a later inserted doorway. There is a half-glazed door with a multi-pane overlight. Above the entrance is a lunette with a freestone surround.
The uphill wing is single-storey and has a corrugated asbestos roof. The three bays to the left were altered in the 19th century, apparently for domestic use, and contain six-over-six-pane horned sash windows with freestone architraves. These flank a planked door with a cambered brick head, beneath a blind square panel. A narrow boarded door and a three-light casement window are on the right side, both with cambered brick heads. Three blocked ventilation slits indicate the former presence of a barn. The southern gable end has no openings.
The downhill wing, now converted into a house, is roughcast with a slate roof, a roughcast ridge stack offset to the left, and three lateral stacks to the rear. Two-light multi-pane casements are on the first floor. A partly-glazed boarded door is situated to the left of centre, beneath a segmental head. A three-light casement window with a flat head sits to the left, and two wider, mid-to-late 20th-century windows are to the right. The northern gable end has no openings.
A 20th-century brick lean-to porch with a flat roof is located to the rear of the central section, offset to the left, and connects to a porch associated with the house. The upper storey has a four-pane window with a cambered brick head, and a six-over-six-pane sash window below, with a similar head. A wide, blocked opening with a segmental brick head can be seen in the centre of the single-storey wing, along with joist holes indicating a former lean-to. An infill opening, likely originally leading to a loft, is located to the far left. Three 20th-century windows are located to the rear of the house on the upper floor, with a multi-pane, two-light casement to the left and the others being late 20th-century replacements. A 20th-century brick lean-to porch with a flat roof is set below. In the south wall of the central block, there is a small fireplace, probably dating from the 19th century.
