Description

Castell Bach is a two-storey house consisting of three main units with later additions, situated on a slope. It is built from local uncoursed limestone masonry and has a slate roof. A large stone chimney stack is located between the lower and middle units. On the south side, there is a single-storey modern lean-to that covers one doorway to the cross passage, while another doorway is found within a later north wing of outbuildings, which is now used as a second house.

On the east (uphill) gable wall, there is a later unit, also made of uncoursed stone and featuring a slate roof, described as a former shippon, which does not connect to the main house. This unit has a modern porch on its north side. The central unit's doorway on the south side is accessed through a glazed porch. The north and south elevations, excluding the additional unit on the east, feature three windows that correspond to the three units, with modern windows set in small openings. The current main doorway is a secondary insertion, and the additional unit on the east has modern windows and a dormer.

Inside, the central unit, which serves as the hall, is accessed directly from the south side through a main doorway that is sheltered by a small, lightly constructed porch. This doorway features a vertical boarded door with a four-pane overlight. The hall retains its large chimney, a chamfered main beam, and flat-laid chamfered joists. Similar joists are visible in the kitchen, although some are boxed in behind a modern ceiling in the bathroom. Upstairs, a large, strongly cambered tie beam can be seen in the wall between the central and east units, though it is hidden behind wallpaper. The current position of the stairs is within the hall against the north side, while a previous stairs location is indicated in the kitchen against the south side.
