Description
Christ's Hospital is a single-storey building that forms three sides of a courtyard, with the main range located to the east and shorter ranges to the south and north. It is built from snecked pecked grey stone, accented with pronounced red sandstone dressings that create a polychrome effect. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with slate, featuring stone ridge stacks and external stacks at the gable ends with offsets.
The openings of the building have rusticated sandstone surrounds, with 2-light windows that have chamfered stone mullions and wooden small-pane casement windows. There is a continuous impost band, and the doors have been renewed; the east range has double doors, while the south and north ranges have single doors, all sheltered under lean-to slated porch canopies supported by curved wooden brackets. Each cottage has one window. The south range contains two cottages, each with a door on the left and a window on the right, while the north range is a mirror image of this layout. The east range features three doorways flanked by windows, with each pair of double doors leading into two cottages.
The west gable ends have tall single lights beside the external stacks, each topped with a pointed-arched sandstone head that bears an incised decorated roundel. At the rear, there is a continuous line of gabled rear wings, which have hipped roofs or half-timbered gables, added in the late 20th century, and feature wooden doors and windows. The interior has not been inspected.
