Description

The garden boundary wall located to the east, north, and west of the Old Cloisters is constructed from large blocks of coursed grey stone and features a flat stone coping, standing approximately 1.5 meters high. At the left end, the wall connects to the southeast angle of the church and a stub wall that extends at a right angle. To the right, it rises over a pointed-arched gateway that has a chamfered stone hoodmould. The wall curves to the right towards a wide gateway, which is angled and serves as the vehicular entrance to the car park. This gateway is flanked by a pair of stone piers topped with pyramidal caps, and between them are double cast iron gates adorned with scrollwork and pointed finials. Further north, opposite the Church House, there is a butt joint, after which the wall transitions to large blocks of random stone without coping, gradually stepping down. The wall continues along the south side of School Road, supported by irregular raked buttresses. At the northwest corner, the wall splits into two sections; the inner wall is taller and covered in vegetation, while the lower wall fronts the road and extends along Prior Street, featuring coping made of alternate raised stones. The two walls rejoin at the northwest corner of St Peter's Churchyard, continuing as a high retaining wall, up to 2.5 meters in height, made of roughly coursed random stone with stone coping. Towards the right, there is a butt joint, beyond which the wall becomes slightly lower and narrower, rising to connect with the northwest angle of the Post Office and containing a small window opening with red brick reveals and a sandstone lintel.
