Description
Maes Cadw Cruck Barn is a stone-built threshing barn dating from the 18th century. It measures approximately 16 meters long, not including the stone bay, and 4.8 meters wide internally. The barn is divided into four bays by crucks, constructed from uncoursed rubble masonry with larger stones used as quoins, and features a slate roof.
From west to east, the barn contains two storage bays, a threshing bay with blocked opposed openings, and a single storage bay. The first cruck is reared westwards, while the other two are reared eastwards. To the east, downhill, there is a fifth stone-built bay of a later date. The door and window openings in each bay facing the house have been altered, and the fourth and additional bays include pitching holes above. There is also a ventilation slot at the rear of the first bay.
The bays of the cruck section are unequal, with the end bays being about 0.5 meters narrower than the inner two. The barn features three cruck frames with ties and collars notched into the sides of the blades, originally having notches for two purlins on each side. One of the ties has been removed and repurposed to support a later loft.
