Description

This group comprises a chapel, a caretaker's house attached at a right angle to the right, and a schoolroom attached to the left, forming a gable end facing onto a raised and railed forecourt. The buildings are constructed of rubble stonework with slate roofs, with red crested tiles on the schoolroom and a central zinc roof vent on the chapel.

The chapel was built in 1815 and extended in 1874. The front gable features a centrally positioned panelled door with a triangular overlight, set within a chamfered frame with pyramid-shaped stops, and surmounted by a painted brick lintel with a stone keystone and string course. Tall, margin-glazed windows flank the door, each with a hinged light, and similar lintels. A shorter window sits above the door, featuring double margin glazing and coloured glass, set within a large, diagonally placed quarry. A datestone reads: 'Addoldy y Methodisdiaid Calfinaidd a adeiladwyd yn y flwyddyn 1815, helaethwyd yn y flwyddyn 1874', translating to 'Chapel of the Welsh Methodists built in the year 1815, enlarged in the year 1874.' The gable verge is supported by three tiers of purlins with shaped ends. The chapel's sides and rear feature similar windows. Internally, the chapel has three banks of slightly raked pine pews, the central bank arranged with a staggered centerline. A square set fawr (a vestry or preparation room) is enclosed by panelling. A symmetrical pulpit with straight stairs, turned newels, and balusters stands prominently against a pilastered two-centred arch on the rear wall, surmounted by a dentil cornice inscribed 'Perchwch dy Nghysegr' (Sit Ye Down). The ceiling is divided into three bays by moulded cross beams, with shaped ceiling features and a circular moulded ventilator at the centre. The plastered walls have no gallery.

The contemporary caretaker’s house has a single-unit double-pile plan. It features nine-paned sash windows with painted stone lintels on the lower floor, and a later pebble-dashed gabled porch with a part-glazed door to the right. The schoolroom presents a gabled front towards the yard in front of the chapel, with margin-glazed sashes flanked by a later red-brick gabled porch; a door is located to one side. Two windows are visible on the road elevation, and a substructure below contains what was formerly the minister’s stable, now converted into a garage.

The raised forecourt is defined by palmette-headed railings set on a low stone wall. The railings step back in front of the house, where a central iron gate is hung on megalithic gate posts. The graveyard to the right is also raised and railed, with trefoil-headed railings, and contains a small railed enclosure housing a plain pink granite war memorial for Bettws. A porch with two doors provides access to the chapel’s interior. The schoolroom stands corner to corner with the chapel and has a central collar truss, plastered ceilings and walls, a boarded dado, a raised desk centrally placed at the back, and reversible iron-framed pine benches. A door connects the schoolroom to the chapel.
