Description
Dr Johnson's Monument is a classical commemorative monument located within a railed enclosure measuring approximately 2.2 meters square. Made of sandstone, the monument shows evidence of having once been painted to resemble marble. It features a tall Grecian urn set atop a square pedestal, reaching an overall height of about 3 meters. The pedestal includes inset white marble plaques on two sides. One plaque is inscribed with "Samuel Johnson LLD/obiit XIII die Decembris/Anno domini MDCCLXXXIV/astatis LXXV," while the other reads, "This spot was often dignified by the presence of Samuel Johnson LLD, whose moral writings exactly conformable to the precepts of Christianity give ardour to virtue and confidence to truth."
