Description

Galch Hill is a small, two-storey house with an end chimney, originally designed with an inside cross-passage plan and featuring a nearly contemporary rear wing that creates an L-shape. The building is constructed from whitened rubble and has a vertically-studded, timber-framed first floor, topped with a renewed slate roof that has slab copings at the gable ends and plain quadrant kneelers on the right side and both sides at the rear. It has large projecting end chimneys with slated gables.

The symmetrical facade includes a central entrance accessed by two modern segmental steps, leading to a modern part-glazed door with an exposed timber lintel. Flanking the entrance are three-light wooden mullioned windows with leaded glazing and exposed timber lintels. To the left of the entrance is a modern plaque marking the birthplace of Thomas and Hugh Myddleton. The upper floor features black painted studding and whitened brick infill, with two-light leaded windows that break the eaves, set within gabled wooden dormers that have oversailing eaves, plain bargeboards, and spiked finials. The rear wing has modern windows, and there is a modern porch addition at the angle of the right chimney breast. In front of this, the original well has been uncovered and now has a modern stone parapet.

Inside, the former hall on the left and the parlour on the right have beamed ceilings, with broach-stopped main beams and stopped-chamfered joists, although some joists in the parlour have been replaced. The hall features a large fireplace with a flat chamfered bressummer. There is a Tudor-arched wooden entrance to the rear, leading to the secondary wing, which also has a beamed, chamfered ceiling. A plain 19th-century straight-flight stair leads to the upper floor, which, along with the entrance hall, occupies part of the former hall.
