Description

The Nurses Home at the North Wales Hospital is a large accommodation block built in a severe Neo-Georgian style. It features rendered brick construction with green Welsh slate roofs and plain rendered chimneys. The building stands three storeys tall and has a long, symmetrical main elevation facing the road to the east. This elevation includes a 17-window main block with projecting, single-window hipped wings at each end. Beyond these wings, there are two-window blocks with hipped roofs, and a single-storey section at the front to the right. A pediment with an oculus is positioned over the central three bays, which are slightly set forward. The central bay features a two-storey canted porch with a pedimented doorcase, while the ground floors of the projecting end wings have single-storey canted bay windows.

The rear elevation is also symmetrical, with a central recessed section containing five windows and a parapet with urn finials at each end. The shaped parapet wall follows the roof slope of the adjacent bays and has similar urn finials. The attic storey includes ocular windows, and there are five small-pane sash windows on the second and first floors. The building has extruded single-storey cycle shed blocks with curvilinear parapet walls. The central entrance is located within a shallow single-storey porch projection. On either side of this recessed central section are five-window sections set forward, featuring small-pane sash glazing with inner windows having nine panes and outer windows having twelve panes. The shallow projecting bays leading to the interior stairs have reliefs depicting baskets of fruit. Beyond these are additional five-window blocks that are also set forward, with three windows on the ground floor and a central splayed bay. The flanking hipped sections are advanced as well, featuring twelve-pane sashes and central canted bays on the ground floor. The interior was not inspected during the survey.
