Description

The town wall, which includes the North-East, Countess, and Goblin Towers, is constructed from uncoursed, flush-faced limestone rubble, primarily resting on rock foundations, with buff-brown sandstone quoining. Most of the wall is still visible, and the segment from the North-East to the South is particularly well-preserved, despite significant damage from Civil War artillery. This section features the half-round North-East and Bastion towers, the rectangular Countess' Tower, and the polygonal Goblin Tower. The walls reach heights of up to 5 meters, although the crenellations have been lost. The Goblin Tower stands approximately 15 meters tall and has a heavily-battered plinth that rises to about 5 meters on the north side. Each face of the tower has irregular openings, which were originally slit-lights with wide inward splay, but these have been widened due to blasting. The walls meet the tower with squinching. On the west side of the old town, there is a section that includes the site of the Exchequer Gate.
