Description
The Gate Tower Block of Plas Castell is a large gate and clock tower built in the 19th century, designed in the Italian Gothic style. It is constructed of red brick, featuring bands of yellow brick and some limestone dressings. The tower has a rectangular shape with two-bay sides and three-bay main faces, where the central bays are broader. The outer bays are highlighted by applied, off-set brick shafts that rise from corbels at the first-floor level and continue through the battlemented upper stage as crenellated turrets.
The lower stage features a large central archway with a four-centred head made of moulded brick, flanked by blind, sunk panels on each side. On the first floor, there is a two-light window with narrow arched lights set within a larger arch. Above this window is an oculus framed in limestone, topped with a heraldic pointed arch; this oculus originally held the clock face. Each outer bay has pointed-arched lancets on every storey, as do the sides, with small-pane glazing and intersecting heads.
The upper stage is battlemented, with off-set dentilations and limestone crenellations. The central bay rises an additional half stage and is capped with similar battlements and off-set corner turrets, featuring faux machicolations and a three-light vertical slit window below. A limestone foundation stone is visible at the bottom right of the tower.
The interior was not inspected during the survey.
