Description

The garden walls at Gwaenynog, dating from the late 18th century, enclose a kitchen garden and include a potting shed known as Mr Macgregor's Potting Shed. The walls form an irregular four-sided plot, constructed of red-brown brick laid in English garden wall bond, with flat stone copings on top. They stand at full height, varying between 2.8 meters and 3.5 meters. A wide segmentally-arched entrance is located in the center of the eastern wall, featuring limestone imposts and key, along with 19th-century boarded gates that were sketched by Beatrix Potter.

At the southern corner, where the southern and eastern walls meet, there is a three-bay carthouse block with a slate roof and plain limestone piers, which has an angled southern gable and modern boarded doors on the left bay. The northern wall includes a short section of cross wall, while the southern wall has an iron half-gate leading to a service court. To the right of this gate, there is a section of limestone rubble wall backed by a lean-to stable block that faces the yard and has seven plain openings.

Adjoining the stable block at the southwest corner is Mr Macgregor's Potting Shed, a long, low rectangular building designed in the Rustic Gothick style. It is built of limestone rubble with a slate roof and tiled ridge, featuring a recessed old boarded door on the west side. The garden-facing gable end has a rectangular 12-pane sash window on the ground floor, with an arched, multi-pane Gothic window above, showcasing elongated stone voussoirs and an opening metal casement section.

Inside Mr Macgregor's Potting Shed, there is a plain beamed ceiling on the ground floor, a slate floor, and a ladder stair leading to the upper loft. The shed also contains a primary crude stone fireplace with a grate.
