Description

Bwlch-issa Farmhouse is a timber-framed building from the 17th century, featuring two panels high raised on stone sill walls. Originally, it had wattle and daub infill, but this has mostly been replaced with brick. The farmhouse has a slate roof and consists of two large bays: a living hall and an inner parlour. A boarded door leads into the hall bay, which is situated in front of a large gable fireplace. The framing includes small corner braces on both the front and back. There is an external stack, possibly added later, at the parlour gable end. The windows are 19th-century timber casements, and there are two small gabled dormers, with the windows having been replaced. A continuous outshut runs along the rear to accommodate services.

Inside, the hall features a fine flagged floor and a cross beam that supports chamfered joists. There is a large, high-set fire lintel that has been doubled up, with the opening framed, and a 19th-century cast iron range. An early oven, which is now blocked, is located in the splayed reveals. A fine post and panel partition separates the parlour from the hall, with a door on the north side. At the front, a dog leg stair with fretted splat balusters and a square newel passes through the partition and is enclosed within the parlour. The parlour has a similar cross beam, which has been lowered at some point, featuring cut stop chamfers. The floor in the parlour is slightly raised above that of the hall and is also flagged. Original windows with diamond set mullions on the rear wall of each room now open into the outshut, with the parlour window having been lowered. The parlour fireplace appears to be an addition and is currently blocked. The upper floor has an old boarded door at the top of the stair enclosure. The truss features queen struts on the tie, supporting a double purlin roof, and is ceiled at the upper purlin level, with the principals tenoned at the apex. The outshut is divided into a room with access to the baking oven and a dairy.
