Description
Plas yn Eglwyseg is a Grade II listed building constructed of stone rubble with ashlar quoining and slate roofs. It dates from the 18th century and features two storeys along with a cellar at the southern end. The building has a double pile plan with gable stacks and a central entrance hall. The front elevation faces east and consists of three window bays. The central entrance is a four-panelled door, with the upper two panels glazed, and is set beneath a bracketed gabled canopy. On either side of the door are three-light iron small-paned casements in timber frames, with the ground floor openings set under segmental brick arches and lintels above the three two-light first floor windows. The stone sills are present, and some early glass remains. The gable stacks have been rendered.
At the downhill southern end, there is a substantial two-storey farm building added later, which includes stabling on the ground floor and a loft above, constructed in a similar style. Its main elevation is on the lower gable end, featuring a central stable door and vented side windows with overlights. There are two boarded doors leading to the loft. A large quoin stone with moulded arrises is located at the front corner, possibly part of a pre-conquest cross base.
During the inspection, there was no access to the interior. However, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW) reports that the building contains chamfered ceiling beams with some moulded joists, a fireplace with side cupboards, and in the southwest room, a two-panelled door and a cyma moulded mantel shelf. An oak staircase runs the full height of the building, featuring a moulded rail, close string, and double square newels on the landings. The first floor has additional beams and joists, and the roof includes purlins.
