Description
Saint George’s Dormitory Block at Howell's School is part of a group of three school houses situated prominently above the main building. These structures are symmetrically arranged and exhibit a free interpretation of Tudor Gothic style, simplified in a modernist manner. The buildings are rendered, likely over concrete construction, and feature stone dressings and green slate roofs.
The dormitory block is three stories tall, with the entrance elevation symmetrically designed around a central gable. This elevation consists of a pattern of bays arranged as 1-3-1-3-1-3-1. The central gable contains the entrance, which features a round-arched door flanked by sidelights, all set within a broken pediment that displays a relief of the patron saint. Narrow flanking windows contribute to a tripartite composition, which is mirrored on the upper floors that feature central two-light windows. The narrow single-window bays are positioned next to the main flanking sections, which include balconies on the first and second floors with plain balustrades. The ground floor is distinguished by French windows designed in a Diocletian style.
At the rear, there is a three-bay return elevation arranged as 1-2-1, leading to a flat-roofed rear wing that shares similar, albeit simpler, detailing. The building has not been fully inspected during the resurvey.
