Description
St George's, St Andrew's and St Patrick's Dormitory Blocks at Howell' School, Denbigh
The three school houses form a strong group in a commanding position above the main building. A strongly symmetrical group, each building is also symmetrically arranged. Free interpretation of Tudor gothic, stripped down in modernist fashion. Render, probably over concrete construction, with stone dressings and green slate roofs. 3 storeyed, entrance elevation symmetrical about a central gable and arranged as 1-3-1-3-1-3-1 bays. Central gable houses entrance: round arched door with side lights in broken pediment housing relief of patron saint. Narrow flanking windows give overall tripartite composition which is echoed on the upper floors which have central 2-light windows. Narrow single-window bays clasp the main flanking sections, which have balconies at first and second floors with plain balustrades; 3x8-panes windows with top opening lights. Ground floor has French windows based on a Diocletian form. 3-bay return elevation (1-2-1) then flat roofed rear wing with similar, though simpler detail.
Not fully inspected on resurvey.
