Description

The NE Quadrangle at Howell's School is a Grade II listed building that consists of two main sections: the Science Block on the northwest and the Drapers Wing on the southeast, connected by a full-height southwest wing and a lower northeast range.

The northwest range is a three-storey structure designed in a gothic style that features an elegant simplicity. It has a smooth render with stone dressings and a steep slate roof with ridge cresting set back behind a parapet. The long range is flanked by advanced outer gables, each showcasing a full-height canted bay window with mullioned lights. The storeys are stepped back, which helps to break up the height when viewed from the northwest. The ground floor includes outer Tudor arched doorways, alternating between paired two-light and five-light mullioned and transomed windows, and a pierced parapet. The first floor features similar windows with a continuous hood mould and a plain parapet, while the recessed attic storey has simple two-light mullioned windows. There are three five-light mullioned and transomed windows in the gable return to the northeast. The southwest return has paired five-light windows followed by an irregular two-window range that connects to a four-bay cross wing, which completes the quadrangle on this side. This cross wing has small paned timber mullioned and transomed windows, along with some sash windows.

The southeast range maintains a gothic character but incorporates classical simplicity. It is rendered with stone dressings and has a banded slate roof. This section is two storeys high over a stone basement. The symmetrical elevation to the southeast features outer gables that flank a central six-window range. The composite windows consist of twelve-pane sashes with three fixed lights above, a design echoed in the wider central windows of the tripartite arrangement in the outer gables. A lower three-window range, set back, connects this block to a possibly later range on the right, which is a severe neo-Georgian style. This three-storey section has a 1-5-1 bay arrangement with eight and twelve-pane sash windows, minimal detailing such as a string course over the ground floor, and a very plain cornice. It has a parapet above a flat roof. A seemingly contemporary two-storey flat-roofed range links this section to the rear of the Science Block, thereby forming the quadrangle.

The building has not been inspected on resurvey.
