Description

Eirianws Farm and Eirianws Cottage is a single-storey cottage dating from around 1600, possibly with earlier origins, and was raised around 1700. A new storeyed house was added to the south around 1800, and both units were altered around 1900.

The primary range, which is to the right, is a low storeyed cottage built of rubble with boulder foundations and a slate roof. It features a large stepped stack at the junction with the later farmhouse range, which was visibly rebuilt around 1900. There is a modern part-glazed Victorian-style door to the left, with modern 4-pane sash windows to the right, flanking a primary opening with sash glazing. A late-Victorian 4-pane sash window is located on the first floor to the left under the eaves, while an earlier mid-Victorian 6-pane sash window is to the right. The roughcast exterior from around 1900 has simple stucco surrounds to the openings and a stucco cill-band to the upper floor. A contemporary cast-iron water pump is attached to the wall to the left of the primary range. Access to the upper entry at the north gable is via external stone steps, leading to a boarded door. There is a later 19th-century oven projection at the rear with two additional openings, one of which is original.

Adjoining to the left is the later farmhouse, which is two storeys high and built with similar construction and stucco treatment. The central entrance is located in the right-hand section, flanked by sash windows, with similar windows above. The two left-hand bays appear to be a later 19th-century addition, with a door to the right and windows as before. Red brick chimneys are present at the left gable end and at the division between the main block and the extension.

Inside, the primary house features a large inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and a later oven. There is a slit window from the stack into what seems to be the original lobby-entry. The ceiling joists, beams, and cross-beams are of good quality, with stopped chamfers. The roof has a 2-bay pegged collar truss design, with one earlier cruck blade visible against the stack gable, possibly relating to an earlier structure. The farmhouse block has pine beamed ceilings and plain fireplaces.

Eirianws Farm and Cottage is listed for its special interest as a vernacular farmhouse with sub-Medieval origins.
