Description

Llangelynin New Church is a simple lancet style Gothic building constructed from rubble with dressed quoins, surrounds, and string-courses. It features a shallow-pitched slate roof that slightly feathers out at the eaves. The west tower is squat and three storeys high, turning octagonal with stepped, triangular facets above simple first-floor lancets that have a linked cornice and hoodmoulds. The bellstorey has zigzag hoodmoulds with plain bell-openings and blank diagonals, and there is a cornice below a crenellated parapet. The west door, which is boarded and has strap hinges, is set within a stepped, pointed opening made of red brick.

The church has a continuous nave and chancel with symmetrical sides, featuring small, centrally-placed, gabled vestries flanked by two large chamfered lancets on each side. The east end has three lancets, with the string-course stepping up at this point.

The churchyard contains slate headstones and tablet tombs, mostly dating from the 19th century, including one particularly fine railed slate-carved obelisk with a finial dedicated to Ann Owen (died 1848) and Richard Owen (died 1870).

Inside, the church has a very simple design with shallow timber roof trusses that alternate between side-braced collars and metal tie-rods, featuring tapered king posts. A wide round arch leads from the west porch, and there are corbelled squinches in the side tower above the first-floor windows. The interior retains original wooden furnishings, along with a Georgian polished marble font with a baluster shaft, which is presumably from the old church. Additionally, there are two stained glass windows by Jones and Willis, from London, Birmingham, and Liverpool.
