Description
Plas Iolyn is a late Regency villa-scale country house built around 1830, with alterations and extensions made in the late 19th century. The building is two stories high and roughly C-shaped, surrounding a rear service court. It features rendered rubble construction with shallow-pitched, hipped roofs, deep bracketed and compartmented eaves, and plain rendered chimneys. The exterior includes rusticated quoins, moulded stucco surrounds to the main windows, and a cill-course at the first floor.
The symmetrical main facade faces west and has a plain, part-glazed panelled door flanked by plain-glazed windows, all set within a single-storey, eight-bay late Victorian enclosed veranda. This veranda features plain sash windows and dividing Tuscan pilasters. On the first floor, there are three 12-pane primary sash windows with external wooden shutters. The south return has a storied, canted late 19th-century bay window with sash windows above and below. The rear of the house is asymmetrical, with tall 8-pane sashes and additional 12-pane windows. There is a large 24-pane casement window on the first floor of the north return of the rear range. A small service court has late 19th-century infill on the former open north side, with boarded doors. The northwest return has further windows, but the first-floor window on the right is blind, showing traces of fictive, painted glazing.
Inside, the house features plain Regency interiors, including a simple swept-rail stair with stick balusters. Overall, Plas Iolyn is a small Regency country house that retains much of its external character despite the later 19th-century alterations.
