Description

Eirianws Cottage is a single-storey cottage dating from around 1600, possibly with earlier origins, and was raised around 1700. A new storeyed house was added to the south around 1800, and both sections underwent alterations around 1900.

The cottage features a low storey construction of rubble with boulder foundations and a slate roof. There is a large stepped chimney stack where it joins the later farmhouse, which was partially rebuilt around 1900. The entrance on the left has a modern part-glazed Victorian-style door, while the right side has modern 4-pane sash windows flanking a primary opening with sash glazing. A late-Victorian 4-pane sash window is located on the first floor to the left under the eaves, and to the right is an earlier mid-Victorian 6-pane sash window. The roughcast exterior from around 1900 includes simple stucco surrounds to the openings and a stucco cill-band on the upper floor. A contemporary cast-iron water pump is attached to the wall on the left of the primary range. There is external stone-stepped access to an upper entry at the north gable, which has a boarded door. At the rear, there is a later 19th-century oven projection with two additional openings, one of which is original.

Adjoining to the left is the later farmhouse, which is two storeys high and constructed with similar materials and stucco treatment. The central entrance is located in the right-hand section, flanked by sash windows, with similar windows above. The two left-hand bays appear to be a later 19th-century addition, with a door to the right and windows as previously described. Red brick chimneys are present at the left gable end and at the division between the main block and the extension.

Inside the primary house, there is a large inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and a later oven. A slit window from the stack leads into what appears to be the original lobby-entry. The interior features good quality stopped-chamfered ceiling joists, beams, and cross-beams. The roof has a 2-bay pegged collar truss with one earlier cruck blade visible against the stack gable, possibly relating to an earlier structure. The farmhouse block has pine beamed ceilings and plain fireplaces.

Eirianws Cottage is listed for its special interest as a vernacular farmhouse with sub-Medieval origins.
