Description
The Head Post Office is a grandly detailed building designed in a neo-Georgian style, constructed in red brick with two storeys and an attic. It features a hipped Roman tiled roof, dentilled eaves, and an egg and dart cornice. The symmetrical front has seven bays, with channel-rusticated pilaster strips at the ends and freestone window dressings. The windows are small pane metal-frame casements, and there are five pedimented dormers.
The ground floor is notable for its extensive use of freestone facing, which includes a plinth and surrounds for the large semicircular headed windows, as well as similar doorways at either end. Between each opening are panelled pilasters, and all arches are adorned with lion's head keystones. The doorways feature glazed fanlights above guilloche moulded lintels with panels inscribed 'public entrance' and panelled double doors. The first-floor window surrounds have sills and cornices, with modern Post Office signs placed between the floors. The right end of the building has a projecting bay and a downpipe dated 1925.
Adjacent to this is a square single-storey structure in a similar style, which has a bullseye window at the centre and now displays an EIIR Jubilee Plaque. Attached to the right is a red brick screen wall with a concave niche. To the left is a single-storey range of three bays that includes a door on the left; it features similar pilasters but has a freestone blocking course and square-headed openings with simpler keystones. The central window includes a clock, and the downpipes here are also dated 1925. A modern extension, designed to be in keeping with the original style, steps forward beyond this range. The rear of the building has cross-ranges at either end.
Inside, the Post Office retains a substantial amount of original detail and is accessed through square-shaped lobbies. At either end of the Post Office hall, there are pilastered and panelled screens with half-glazed doors, along with egg and dart and dentil cornices.
