Description

34 Penrhyn Buildings, located on Penrhyn Road in Colwyn Bay, is a three-storey building constructed from buff brick with white faience dressings. The structure has a curved plan and consists of three distinct elements that are symmetrically arranged around a central block. This central block features three shops with white faience shop fronts at the ground floor and an articulated design above, displaying a pattern of 1-3-2-3-1, with narrow end bays over the side entrances and a pediment over the two central bays.

The building includes plain brick pilasters between the windows, which are two-pane sashes with margin lights, and a Greek Key frieze in the entablatures on the first floor. The second floor features twelve-pane sash windows. A white faience cornice adorns the top, while the side entrances are framed by moulded architraves with flat entablature hoods.

The shop fronts show that the right-hand unit has been renewed, but the others retain their original features, including curved glazing with margin lights in the upper panes, tiled stall risers, and mosaic floors. Flanking the central block are symmetrical outer bays, also three storeys high, topped with steep hipped green slate roofs. These outer bays have leaded upper panes on the first floor and five twelve-pane sash windows on the second floor, along with white faience architraves to the first-floor windows and a white cornice band. While many of the shop fronts have survived, some of the glazing has been renewed.
