Description

The building, 28 Penrhyn Buildings, comprises Nos 28-34 Penrhyn Road and Nos 1-7 Princes Drive, Colwyn Bay. It is a buff brick structure with white faience dressings, built in the 18th century and curved in plan. The design incorporates three distinct elements arranged symmetrically around a central block of three shops, which have white faience shop fronts at ground floor level. Above the shop fronts, the fenestration is articulated as a pattern of 1-3-2-3-1, with narrow bays over the side entrances and a pediment over the two central bays. Plain brick pilasters are positioned between the windows, which are largely 2-pane sashes with margin lights. The first floor windows have a Greek Key frieze in the entablatures, while the windows on the second floor are 12-pane sashes. A white faience cornice runs along the building line. The side entrances are set within moulded architraves with flat entablature hoods. The shop fronts vary; the unit on the right has been renewed, but the others retain their original curved glazing with margin lights in the upper panes, along with tiled stall risers and mosaic floors. The central block is flanked by two symmetrical outer bays, also three-storeyed, featuring steep hipped green slate roofs and incorporating leaded upper panes to the first floor windows. The second floor windows in these bays are five 12-pane sash windows. White faience architraves define the first-floor windows, and a white cornice band runs along the tops of these bays. Many of the original shop fronts remain, though some of the glazing has been replaced.
