Description

This three-storey building with an attic, located at 1 Vaughan Street, was constructed in the Northern European Renaissance style and dated 1897, as indicated by a panel on the Oxford Road elevation. The exterior walls are pebbledash, with painted dressings. The windows are largely sash windows without glazing bars, with replacements visible on Oxford Road. A plate glass shop front occupies the ground floor.

The Oxford Road elevation is characterized by two bays. The right-hand bay features a paired sash window with a shouldered architrave, pilasters, and a pediment, alongside a paired sash window with a similar architrave and a canted three-light bay window on the first floor. The left-hand bay displays a panel dated 1897. To the right of this, a lower section has paired windows, and a first-floor oriel window is located to the right. A semi-octagonal corner bay rises to an octagonal attic storey with sash lights flanked by consoles, surmounted by an octagonal cupola with a finial. An eaves cornice runs along the roofline. The sash windows on the second and first floors have moulded architraves and pilasters; the centre light on the first floor is gabled.

The Vaughan Street elevation features a paired attic window within a small decorative structure (an aedicule). A central mullion rises from a ground floor window to a gable, surmounted by a ball finial. A two-storey canted three-light bay window is present, featuring sash windows without glazing bars, completed with a parapet. A round-headed doorway with pilasters and an archivolt is found at the left-hand end of the ground floor. The shopfront has been modernised and includes windows facing both Vaughan Street and Oxford Road.
