Description

Llanycil Cottage is a small one-and-a-half storey former schoolhouse built in a simple Tudor style. It features rubble construction, a renewed slate roof, and overhanging boarded eaves. A distinctive hexagonal stone chimney is located at the center, complete with a cornice and square base. The front of the building is symmetrical with two windows and a gabled porch in the center. The porch has an inscribed, segmentally-arched timber panel above the entrance, with square-headed openings on the sides that contain seats. The porch is accessed through boarded double doors.

Flanking the porch are three-light metal frame casement windows with diamond-paned metal-frame glazing above high transoms, all fitted with slate lintels and stopped labels. A similar window is found on the left gable end, and another on the two-window rear. The eaves at the rear have been raised in two places to accommodate modern dormers. There is a plain three-light window on the right gable end, where the boundary wall steps up, and an attached monopitch-roofed outhouse.

Inside, the layout is simple, featuring a triangular-shaped lobby created by diagonally placed doorways. The schoolmaster's house is to the left, and the schoolroom is to the right, with fireplaces located in the central dividing wall.
