Description

Bryn Tegid is a small early Victorian country house of two storeys, constructed in an irregular T-plan with a main south-east-facing range and a contemporary service wing to the rear.

The house is built of local slatestone and limestone. The main south-east and north-east elevations are of squared, coursed blocks, while the rebuilt southern corner is of uncoursed, dressed slate stone. The service range is of rubble. The roof is of slate, shallow-gabled to the front (north-east elevation) and hipped elsewhere. Stone chimneys with cornice bands support tall ceramic pots.

The entrance front is asymmetrical with six bays. The left-hand three bays correspond to the main block, while the right-hand three bays correspond to the service range and are set back accordingly. A single-storey early 20th-century porch addition has been extruded into the angle between the two ranges and advances slightly to the front. The main section has two shallow gables with simple bargeboards to slightly projecting verges. The left-hand gabled part is recessed slightly with a canted angle joining the right-hand part. Windows throughout feature wide marginal glazing: French doors are present on the left, with tall 10-pane sashes to the right at ground level; an 8-pane sash appears at the centre of the first floor, flanked by 12-pane sashes, all unhorned and primary. The service part has standard 12-pane sashes to the first floor, a 16-pane sash to the ground floor left, and an entrance to the right with a meshed 2-light window beyond and a part-glazed door. The extruded porch block has an open front with a concrete lintel and side windows with decorative leaded glazing. The recessed front door is multi-panel with an 8-light leaded upper part; a further boarded service door stands to the far right on the right return.

The south-east (garden) elevation has four bays. The left-hand bay is canted to face south and features an early 20th-century wooden conservatory porch with arcaded lower section and small-pane upper glazing, with a glazed lean-to roof. Within this porch is a pair of French doors, and above is an 8-pane sash with wide marginal glazing, recessed within chamfered stone reveals. The right-hand bays have similar windows; the first floor contains an 8-pane window at the centre with flanking 12-pane sashes. The ground floor has an 8-pane central window and large flanking 15-pane sashes reaching down to ground level. Replaced masonry relating to the early 20th-century remodelling is visible on the left and central bays.

The south-west elevation features a three-bay service block on the left, joined to the advanced end of the main range (right) by a full-height extruded block of two bays. Sashes throughout include original 12-pane windows to the extruded block and service range. The latter has two entrances to the ground floor and two modern windows to the right. A part-glazed service entrance to the extrusion is deeply recessed with a 6-pane overlight.

The entrance hall contains an Arts and Crafts fireplace with a tall relief-carved overmantel of painted wood. A contemporary well-type stair of oak leads off, featuring square, panelled newels with ball finials and stick balusters. The Dining Room has double doors with panelled lower and decorative leaded upper sections, a parquet floor, and panelled window reveals. Its fireplace is of mid-19th-century date (primary), executed in grey figured marble with plain pilasters and mantelpiece. The Drawing Room features an early 20th-century Adamesque fireplace with similar reveals. The main ground floor rooms have single doors with similarly glazed upper sections.
