Description

Yr Hen Ysgol is a schoolhouse featuring a T-shaped school at the rear, built with rubble construction and topped with slate roofs. The building has timber eaves and bargeboards, with the bargeboards on the north gable and the three front dormer windows showcasing carved scrollwork and pendant finials. Octagonal rubble chimney stacks are present on the gables of the house, while a brick gable stack serves the rear schoolroom.

The house has a two-storey, three-bay front. The ground floor features later timber cross-windows with stone voussoirs and hood-moulds, while the upper floor has similar glazing beneath gabled dormers, all with slate sills. The central door is boarded and includes a decorative four-pane overlight with a cambered stone voussoired head. The north end of the house has a projecting gabled frame made of slate slabs, while the south end is plain.

The single-storey, five-bay south elevation of the rear schoolroom was remodeled in the late 19th century. The penultimate four-pane windows have cambered stone voussoired heads, while the other three windows are taller, featuring six panes and rising to dormers with overhanging half-hipped roofs, all with stone lintels and slate sills.

On the north side, the projecting schoolroom in the center has two timber four-light transom and mullion windows, each with four panes, along with slate sills and stone lintels. There are two-light twelve-pane windows on the east and west sides, also with cambered stone voussoired heads. A porch on the left, at the angle with the house, has a boarded door and a six-pane window, both with similar heads. An outshut porch on the right, built against the rear schoolroom, features a three-light eighteen-pane window to the north with a stone lintel and slate sill, along with a boarded door to the west that has a four-pane overlight and a cambered stone voussoired head. Above the rear schoolroom is a dormer window with a hipped roof and a three-light eighteen-pane window. There is a later rubble extension at the west end.

The rear schoolroom has a late 19th-century kingpost-type roof and a dividing glazed timber screen.
