Description

23-25 Bridge Street is a pair of shops with dwellings above, built in a simple classical style during the late 19th century. The building stands 3½ storeys tall and features a 4-window front. The exterior is roughcast, with dentilled eaves beneath a graded slate roof that has a central roughcast chimney stack. At the time of inspection, all ground-floor openings were boarded up.

The late 19th-century shop front, which was originally for two shops, includes pilasters and fascia end brackets at the cornice, with shop windows that have slender mahogany mullions and classical detailing, above a polished granite stall riser. The recessed doorways feature mosaic floors with the lettering "Lake and Co Ltd" and panelled ceilings. The glazed doors are set diagonally and have ‘eye’ shaped panels along with segmental foliated pediments above. There is an additional doorway on the left end, which has a panelled door and a traceried overlight.

Windows on the middle and upper storeys are framed with architraves, and there are 2-storey vertical inscription panels set back from the ends. The middle storey contains six over single-pane hornless sash windows, while the upper storey has shorter sash windows, mainly with nine panes, although some have had their glazing bars removed. Two gabled dormers are present, featuring lunettes with sinuous aprons; the left one is boarded up, while the right retains some small-pane glazing.

The rear of the building is also roughcast and retains some sash windows, with tall narrow stair lights on the outer sides. The ground slopes sharply at the rear, where there is a three-storey roughcast rear wing at basement level.

Inside No 25, there is a notable Art Nouveau staircase with pierced flat balusters and tapered newels. The display shelving features Art Nouveau details and turned balusters at each level, with pediments over taller pilasters and a dentil cornice. No 23 has a panelled dado that retains a small amount of similar detailing.
