Description
This is a block of shops with dwellings above, built in an eclectic classical style. The front is clad in stucco with a slate roof, which is slightly lower and hipped at number 4, and features roughcast stacks. The building is three storeys high, with consistent details across the middle and upper storeys, although the number of windows within each property varies. Each property is defined by angle pilasters in the middle and upper storeys and is articulated with a frieze and a deeply moulded cornice, which also serves as a sill band for the upper storey. The middle-floor windows are framed by moulded architraves with a sill band. The upper-floor windows are segmental-headed and set within plain architraves. A moulded eaves cornice is present, featuring brackets alternating with raised quatrefoil panels. The lower storey contains a three-window range with a shop front dating from the mid-20th century. The middle and upper storeys retain original windows; these are 2-light casements with fixed upper lights in the middle storey, and 4-pane sash windows in the upper storey. This building is part of a group at 4-14 Eastgate Street.
