Description

This building, 4 Eastgate Street, is part of a group comprising numbers 4 to 14 and is a block of shops with living accommodation above, constructed in an eclectic classical style. The front is faced with stucco and has slate roofs, with a lower, hipped roof to number 4, and roughcast stacks. The details of the middle and upper storeys are consistent across the block, although the number of windows varies between each property. Each property is visually framed by angle pilasters in the middle and upper storeys and is articulated by a frieze and a deeply moulded cornice, which also serves as a sill band to the upper storey. The windows on the middle floor have moulded architraves with a sill band, while the upper-floor windows are segmental-headed and set within plain architraves. A moulded eaves cornice features brackets alternating with raised quatrefoil panels.

The ground floor has a 4-window shop front with a wooden fascia, partly missing, featuring panelled pilasters with raised diamond panels, double end brackets, and a deep bracketed cornice. The doorway is recessed and the stallboard is panelled. (The shop windows and door were boarded up at the time of inspection.) The middle and upper storeys incorporate original 2-light casement windows with fixed overlights on the middle floor, except for the right-hand property which has replacement windows of a similar design. The upper floor has 4-pane sash windows. The right-hand end wall is pebble-dashed, with an external flue reduced to just beneath the eaves. It is built above a lock-up at basement level which faces Tanybont (currently an Eastern Orthodox chapel). The rear of the building has a projection on the right side and a basement extending to the lower ground floor level.
