Description

The Casual Ward at Bron-y-Garth Hospital is an L-plan single-storey building constructed from local rubble and topped with a slate roof. It features very wide bracketed eaves and a tall red brick chimney stack. To the left, there is a cross range with a broad gable end that has a 2 + 2-window arrangement, with horned 12-pane sash windows providing light to the warden's accommodation. A lean-to porch is situated in the angle to the right, and beyond it are small pivot windows located just below the eaves, arranged in three pairs to light individual cells. The structure also includes a raised ventilator and a skylight at the ridge. The rear of the gabled cross range has five windows, and beyond it is a full-width lean-to with massive lintels over full-height recesses, which retain cast iron plates with small round holes that were formerly upright in ramped frames. Behind these are four-pane casement windows.

Inside, there are twelve cells opening off a tall corridor. The cells on the southwest side consist of two chambers: one for sleeping and another for working, the latter having a stepped-down cobbled floor, while the sleeping area has a boarded floor. The cells on the northeast side contain only the sleeping area. The corridor features boarded doors, most of which have small lights and rounded ventilation holes in the walls. Original fittings are retained in the washroom at the southeast end, opposite what was likely the dining room. Beyond this area is a doorway leading into the warden's accommodation, which includes fireplaces in the large rooms.
