Description

Bron-y-Garth Hospital is a large former workhouse complex built of rubble, with the main elevations covered in roughcast and slate roofs. The building follows a standard grid-plan layout, featuring transverse and spinal ranges connected by a central octagonal block. Most of the windows are small pane sashes.

The front range facing the road has two storeys and a basement, forming a four-bay block with an advanced centre, a hipped slate roof, and wide eaves. This section, which was formerly the main entrance, has a window inserted into what used to be the doorway. There are single-storey ranges set back on either side of the front range; the left side is largely pebbledash and original, while the right side is rubble and partly built after 1888. Both sides feature deep bracket hoods over the doorways and horned small pane sash windows throughout.

The spinal range extends from the central block to the three-storey octagon and three-storey parallel ranges, creating two courtyards that are open at the ends. The northeast courtyard has rubble ranges, and the main entrance is located in a flat-roof extension. The southwest courtyard is mostly pebbledash and includes a red brick stack. The parallel range features a second-floor cill band. The rear courtyards are slightly larger, predominantly three storeys high and built of rubble, with all windows featuring 15 and 20 pane sashes and massive lintels. There are doorways leading to the second floor. The northeast rear courtyard is closed off at the top by a single-storey range, while the southwest courtyard includes detached garages.

Inside, some windows and doors near the main entrance of the hospital have lugged architraves and panelled reveals.
