Description
Y Berllan is a two-storey, T-shaped building with a longer east-west range extending south, parallel to the east-west range of the T-plan. The building is constructed of roughly coursed rubblestone, with some areas finished with roughcast. It has a slate roof with deep verges and carved purlin ends. The east front features a 3-light, 24-paned casement window on the ground floor of a projecting gable, and a 2-light, 16-paned casement above, both with voussoirs to slightly cambered heads. To the left is a 2-light, 12-paned window and a 4-panel door (with glazed top panels) set under an open lean-to porch in the angle of the gable. The south front of the long east-west range includes an entrance to the far left, immediately followed by a 2-light, 12-paned casement window, with another directly above within a gabled dormer that breaks the eaves. A tall 2-light, 12-paned window is positioned to the right, likely illuminating the staircase. Prominent chimney stacks are a key feature. Integrated chimney stacks with stone bases and paired diagonal purple brick shafts are found on the west wall of the long east-west range and the south wall of the north-south range. Similar lateral stacks are on the north side of the shorter east-west range, with the western stack having a brick base and a single tall diagonal brick shaft. A single-storey, lean-to brick outbuilding is attached to the north-west corner of this range, and a boundary wall is attached to its south, screening the gable end of the long east-west range. The building is part of a group of two buildings, along with 4A. The interior was not inspected.
