Description
This is a 17th century barn located to the north of Methlem. It is constructed from uncoursed rubble stone masonry, featuring large stones at the corners and in the lower parts of the walls. The barn has massive lintels over wide doorways, with one on each side, and these doorways have projecting stones in the jambs along with flanking vent loops. The door on the west side is currently blocked. The steep roof, which was originally covered with old small slates, has been replaced with corrugated iron.
At the north end, there is a tall door that was once a loft door; it has been cut down and the steps have been removed. The jambs of this door are made of rough stones, and there are two vent loops nearby. The south end of the barn also features projecting stones.
While the interior is not available for inspection, it is reported that there were timber inner lintels to the windows and hewn roof trusses and purlins, which may have been replaced since then.
