Description
The Cowhouse and Farm Range located west of Ty'n-llan is a Grade II listed structure built from rubble stonework, featuring larger rubble quoins and slate roofs. This L-shaped range forms the northern and western sides of the midden yard, which has a raised rough stone pavement along these two sides. The cowhouse occupies the entire northern side of the yard and is adjacent to a narrow orchard along the roadside. It includes a stable door for each half and two ventilation windows. In the northwest corner, there is a feed preparation room, currently used as a workshop, which is accessed from the carthouse in the western range. This room has three small ventilation openings on the northern side and a door leading to the rick yard west of the farmyard.
The western range consists of several sections: on the right, there is a single bay open-fronted carthouse, followed by a two-bay barn that features a boarded door and two tall slit vents. Beyond the end of the raised pavement, there is a lower calf-house with a wide timber door, which is now used for sheep. The barn has a corrugated roof at the rear.
Inside the cowhouse, it is divided by a stone wall into two unequal parts, each equipped with stalling. The eastern section has two double stalls with access to a feeding walk along the northern wall. The adjoining half consists of two bays and includes three double stalls and a narrow passage leading to the feeding walk. The stalls are constructed with slate slabs, and there is a similar slab against the feeding walk, along with a low-placed feeding trough. The concrete floor drains into a central channel. The roof truss is made with doubled sawn principals set into the walls and clasping a collar, supported by a single purlin. The end food preparation bay features a flagged floor. In the western arm, beyond the open-fronted carthouse, the two-bay barn has an inserted hayloft in its southern bay, accessible by a ladder. The calf-house at the end of the range includes a manger along the western wall.
