Description
The walls to the inner and outer gardens on the east side of Vaynol Old Hall are notable features of the property. The inner garden is rectangular and set below ground level, matching the height of the service basement of the Old Hall. Access from the north is via five steps leading down, accompanied by a hedge and a revetment wall. This wall is approximately 4 meters high to the south and between 2 to 5 meters high to the east, featuring a central voussoired archway. In the center of the inner garden, opposite the service door, there is an oval pool that is flush with the surrounding garden and includes a fountain at its center, designed as a lobed bowl on cross supports.
To the east, the outer garden is enclosed by roughly coursed rubble walls that stand about 4 meters high and are battered on the outside. The outer corners of these walls are rounded, and there is a cart entrance at the south end of the east side, flanked by plain capped gate piers. The entrance features later boarded gates. Additionally, a lean-to shelter extends across the garden on the southern side.
