Description
These shops, with domestic accommodation above, date from the 19th century and form part of a group. The right-hand part, of three bays, constitutes No. 57, while the left-hand, single wide bay, comprises No. 59. The construction is rendered rubblestone, with plaster quoins marking the angles and framing the central and right-hand first-floor windows of No. 57. The building has a slate roof, with a rendered ridge stack to the left and an integral stack to the left gable end. The windows are mostly 12-paned sashes; those on the ground floor of No. 57 and the first floor are of this type, while the window above the shop front of No. 57 has 9 panes. No. 57 features a Victorian shop front with pilasters framing the cast-iron shop front itself and the C19 half-glazed door leading to the domestic accommodation. This is all set beneath a moulded fascia with pedimented consoles, slender colonettes, a frieze, and rosettes in the spandrels. The recessed, splayed entrance has a black and white tiled floor and a C20 glazed door beneath the original ogee-shaped overlight with a scrolled segmental pediment. No. 59 has a bowed shop front dating from the late 20th century. The interior was not inspected during the survey.
