Description
The Penyrorsedd War Memorial is a large memorial made of purple slate, supported by console brackets at the top and bottom. It is mounted on the side of a block of squared stone that steps over a central slate cross positioned above the main panel and capped with slate.
The main panel features a central inscription that reads ‘ER COF AM’ along with the names of 14 individuals who died, and ‘A GWYMPASANT 1914-1918’. This inscription is surrounded by borders depicting pictorial scenes carved in very low relief. The scenes on the sides and upper borders illustrate working life in the quarry: on the left, a truck is being hoisted from within the quarry; at the top center, two men are dressing slate; and on the right, the offices, buildings, and incline of the quarry are depicted. The lower panel portrays a battlefield scene. At the base, there is an additional slate panel that lists four more names.
