Description

The Rock is a two-storey house built of rubble stone that was originally roughcast, featuring a slate roof and flat boarded eaves. The front range has four windows with 6-pane sash frames and stone lintels. A straight joint indicates that the left half of the building is original, while the right section, to the south, is an addition. There are roughcast chimneys at the left end and on the centre ridge.

The north end wall displays deep bracketed eaves and a radiating-bar oval light on the first floor to the left, above a 20th-century door set in an early 19th-century recessed doorcase with fluted columns and a half-elliptical radiating bar fanlight. A projecting columned porch once existed here. To the left, there is a corner stair projection with continuous walling, featuring a canted angle with a long arched stair-light and a canted hipped roof. This section connects to a rear wing that has a tall east end stack with two shafts and a 16-pane sash window on each floor to the north. The roof of this rear wing is hipped on the west side to join the main range, suggesting it is likely an addition. There are also 20th-century additions behind the south end range.

Inside, there is a rear axial passage with a stair to the left of the entry. The rooms have 6-panel doors with reeded doorcases. The stair curves up in a semi-circle, although the balusters have been removed. The north room features a sideboard recess and panelled shutters on the windows. One upper room is said to have a coved ceiling, which is now concealed. A large beam is present over the rear kitchen fireplace.
