Description
The Railed Enclosures in the churchyard of the Church of St Engan consist of two linked iron-railed burial enclosures, both rectangular in shape. The larger enclosure, located to the south, features ornate mid to late 19th century cast iron corner posts adorned with spiral ribbon and leaf-scroll caps. The rails of this enclosure are decorated with ornate cast spearheads. Inside, there is a slate table tomb dedicated to Thomas Williams of Dwylan, who died in 1847, and his father Thomas Williams, who died in 1884. There is also a ground-level slab for the Rev John Hughes, who passed away in 1875.
The northern enclosure has square fluted cast-iron corner posts topped with urn caps and spearhead rails that display an alternating pattern of heads. This enclosure is earlier in date but not likely as early as the grave slabs it contains, which are for the Rev John Roberts, who died in 1822, and his son William, who died in 1814.
