Description
The Turnpike is a building designed in a picturesque Gothic style, constructed with regularly coursed and dressed granite blocks that alternate with slightly projecting slate stones set on edge to create a banded pattern. It features a slate roof with a diaper pattern made from contrasting grey and green slates, supported by rough modillioned eaves cornice. The building has a basic T-plan with two equal-height ranges; the eastern range includes a gable-lit attic at the front and a steeply pitched gable at the center of the long wall. A single-storey porch projects to the left of the steeply pitched gable. There is an integral end stack to the north of the east range and a similar ridge stack to the right of the west range, both exhibiting the same architectural details as the rest of the cottage. The building has 20th-century joinery throughout and a blocked window in the steeply pitched gable. Access to the interior was not possible at the time of the survey.
