Description
The Sunday School and vestry to Bethel Chapel is set within a low enclosure made of rubble walls, featuring spear-headed iron railings and gates. It has a ramped entrance with walls and brick paviors. The building, designed in a simple Italianate style, has a long rectangular plan and is one storey high with a basement. Its walls are cement-rendered, and it has a slate roof.
The entrance front features rusticated quoins above a high plinth and a string course that also serves as a cill band for the windows. The slightly projecting central section has a steep pediment that breaks through the cornice. This section includes a pair of panelled doors beneath a plain rectangular overlight, framed by coupled plain pilasters that support a plain entablature. Above this is a 2-light blind panel with three pilasters and a plain entablature. On either side, there are 8-light rectangular windows in plain pilastered surrounds. The six-bay returns feature tall 28-paned glazing bar sashes, with the top row of lights being top-opening, positioned above a string course. The second bay from the left has a 4-panel door in a recessed opening that interrupts the string course. Below the string course, where the ground drops, are four iron-barred sash windows that light the basement.
Inside, the entrance lobby has coloured glass, and a glazed screen at the far end can fold back to create a large open space. Beyond this area are the kitchen and vestry, the latter featuring an early 20th-century chimneypiece.
